From product concept
to production-ready pet products

GuardHound coordinates product definition, design and engineering, prototyping, validation, brand customization and production readiness for pet brands, distributors and product teams.

Definition first We agree the market, the user and the feature boundary before deciding what to change or build.
Prototype and validate Build the sample, assemble it, run it, test it — and surface the problems before tooling.
Production readiness Specification, tooling, materials and packaging align before volume production starts.

Development paths

Start with the requirement,
not the catalogue

Different brands sell into different markets at different price points, to different users, with different feature expectations.

The same product category can need a completely different product depending on where it is sold: dimensions, materials, feature trade-offs, control method and packaging language all move. So before any design work starts, we place the requirement on one of three paths — that decision sets the workload, the timeline and the cost structure.

Get the path wrong and every later step has to be redone. It is the reason requirement definition comes first in our process.

01

Existing Product Customization

Private label

Brand and configuration changes on a product that already exists: identity, colour, CMF, packaging, manual, language and accessory set. The structure and core function stay as they are, which keeps the route short and the risk low — usually the fastest way to test a market.

02

Platform-based ODM

Platform

Secondary development on a GuardHound smart pet product platform: sensor selection, control logic, connectivity and app coordination, recognition features, partial structure and appearance changes. The more that is reused, the shorter the distance from requirement to sample.

03

New Product Development

Joint development

Starting from product definition: new structure, new functions, new electronics and firmware, taken through prototyping and engineering validation before production readiness. The longest route, and the one that needs both sides aligned on specification and milestones throughout.

Product development capabilities

What a pet product project may involve

This is the set of areas we can evaluate and coordinate on a project. It is not a claim that every one of them is already proven in-house for every product.

Industrial DesignForm & CMF

Product form, CMF direction, the human–pet interaction and the overall appearance language.

Mechanical EngineeringStructure

Structure breakdown, assembly relationships, tooling and design-for-manufacture review — what decides whether the product can be built consistently.

ElectronicsHardware

Control architecture, main control and drive, power and interface design, and the mechanical fit around the electronics.

FirmwareEmbedded

Control logic, sensor sampling and decision thresholds, run-state and fault handling, and the update path.

IoT / App IntegrationConnectivity

Protocol selection, how device and app act on each other, network setup flow, data logging and remote control.

SensorsSensing

Choosing a sensing approach per function — weight, infrared, photoelectric, water level, temperature and humidity — then calibrating it in the real use case.

AI / VisionRecognition

How image recognition, pet behaviour detection and cat-face recognition are implemented on a specific product, and the compute trade-off that comes with it.

RFID / IdentificationMulti-pet

Identity and multi-pet separation: tag approach, read distance and mounting position, and how the data is returned.

Packaging DevelopmentRetail ready

Carton structure, inserts and transit protection, artwork and multilingual copy, and where compliance labelling has to sit.

Scope boundary

These are development areas we can evaluate and coordinate, not a statement that all of them apply to every project. What a specific project actually covers depends on platform maturity, the target market's requirements and the project's own conditions. We assess it case by case after the requirement is confirmed, and put the conclusion in writing in the specification before moving on.

Process

How a project moves forward

Eight stages, each with a defined output. The point is not the diagram — it is that every stage's conclusion is written down, so the sample you approved and the version that goes into production are not two different products.

01

Requirement & Market Definition

Category, target market, use scenario, volume range, price band and compliance requirements. We agree what problem is being solved before discussing the product.

02

Product Direction

A direction for form and key feature trade-offs, plus a feasibility call: which development path this is, and what has to be newly created.

03

Structure & Feature Definition

Dimensions, materials, electronics, functional logic and packaging requirements written into a specification — the single reference every later approval is measured against.

04

Prototype Development

Build to the specification and put a physical sample in your hands, so form, assembly and feel can be judged on the real object.

05

Engineering Validation

Functional, structural and runtime validation of the sample, deliberately surfacing fit conflicts, false triggering and stability problems at this stage.

06

Design Iteration

Adjust structure, function or appearance against the validation results and your feedback, then produce a second sample round until specification and object agree.

07

Brand & Packaging Customization

Carton and inserts, brand mark placement, multilingual manuals and accessory configuration, confirmed together with the product.

08

Production Readiness

Hand the approved specification, tooling, materials and packaging to manufacturing, and run volume production against that same document.

Every stage produces something you can check. Sample against specification, validation conclusions, packaging artwork and production documents all have to line up — otherwise the project starts depending on someone's memory. Once development closes, the product still has to move through manufacturing, quality and delivery; that part continues in the supply network.

OEM / ODM customization

What can be customized, and what needs its own project

Customization is not unlimited. Being explicit about where the two kinds of change divide is more useful than a blanket promise to build anything.

Standard Customization

Changes we can usually apply to an existing product

Configuration and artwork work that does not alter the product platform, run against the confirmed configuration.

  • Branding
  • Colour
  • CMF finish
  • Packaging & carton
  • Manual & language
  • Accessory set
  • Plug & cable configuration
  • Product bundle

Feasibility, minimum order quantity and timing are confirmed per product and per customization scope.

Development Project

Changes that need redesign, retooling or rewritten logic

These are scoped as a development project: feasibility, cost and timeline are assessed first, then you decide whether to proceed.

  • Structure
  • Functions & operating modes
  • Sensors
  • Electronics
  • Control logic & firmware
  • App / IoT coordination
  • New appearance & CMF system
  • New components

A development project starts with a proposal and a quotation; prototyping and validation follow only after you approve it.

Sample lead time

Confirmed according to product maturity and development scope.

MOQ

Confirmed according to product and customization requirements; standard customization and development projects follow different logic.

Certification

Defined according to product type and target market.

Pricing

Quoted after the specification is confirmed, based on configuration, volume and packaging.

Prototype & engineering validation

From “looks possible”
to engineering-ready

A visual concept only proves that something could look right. What decides whether a product can be manufactured is assembly, stability, fault handling and whether the packaging actually protects the unit.

  • Assembly & fitInterference, clearances, tolerance stack-up and fastener reliability.
  • FunctionEvery item in the specification run through, including boundary conditions and continuous operation.
  • Electronics & controlPower, standby, fault recovery and the stability of sensor decisions.
  • Packaging protectionCarton structure, inserts and product protection in transit condition.
  • Production repeatabilityWhether the sample method can be executed repeatedly, rather than producing one unit.

The quality system's own execution points — incoming, in-process and outgoing inspection — belong to Quality Management. This page covers what development has to deliver and to what level it has to be validated.

Existing product platforms

Existing platforms can shorten part of the development path

GuardHound's smart pet product lines cover a number of long-running directions. Their value is not that we have a lot of products — it is that certain functions, structures, sensing and connectivity approaches have already been taken through once.

An existing platform can shorten some projects' path from requirement to sample: functions, structures and connectivity already proven on that platform can reach the sample stage sooner. This is not a timeline commitment for every project. Anything involving new structure, new sensing or a new market's compliance requirements still has to be run as a development project.

Real project evidence

Start with a platform project

These are development records from GuardHound's own product platforms, showing what a project has to reach in structure, customization and production. Full documentation is being added to Case Studies.
